Laura,

Hope you're well. Just checked out this post and indeed the dkms stuff that comes with intrepid should save your tears. It became more of a pain for me when kernel upgrades failed to update the SATA modules for my HD.. on remote servers that was a bit of a showstopper. DKMS fixed that for me.. so hopefully fix you too.

First time I've come across your blog, but will prolly take a closer look.

Intrepid has a thing that deals with this, called DKMS. If you reboot and it sees that modules registered with DKMS are out of date relative to the kernel, it will compile them then and there, and then continue your bootup with those fresh ones.

The default nvidia modules that come with ubuntu seem to use this now, as do virtualbox ones, and some other ones that I was helping debug before release. I wouldn't be surprised to find that vmware uses this soon, if they don't already. Same for envy, it could just register the nvidia modules and the problem is solved.

Hi Laura,

On Ubuntu Hardy, I use the package "linux-restricted-modules-generic" which includes the nvidia module.

If you install this, it will always depend on the latest pre-compiled modules for your current kernel (including the ones that come in through updates) contain the nvidia module. You'll also want the "nvidia-glx-new" package for the X driver component.

By having both of these installed, you should be able to avoid recompiling the driver manually each time.

Cheers,
Dominic
